Industry mourns Ian Sands
Prominent distribution/exhibiton figure Ian Sands died at age 56 in Melbourne, from complications after a heart transplant.
Sands funeral will be at 2pm on August 5 at the Astor Theatre in St Kilda, Victoria.
Sands started his career as an assistant booker with Twentieth Century Fox in 1972, but it was at Roadshow that he spent most of his working life. In 1973 he joined Village Roadshow and became programming manager and film buyer, moving on to Roadshow Films in the 80s as general sales manager Sands became managing director of the company in the 90s and chairman in 1999.
Sands spent the last decade as manager for special projects for Village Roadshow – dealing with anti-piracy initiatives until his departure in 2004 – and director of operations at Reading Entertainment. He was also president of the Society of Australian Cinema Pioneers.
Ian was a tremendous gentleman – one of the few true gentlemen in the industry. He’ll be remembered with love and respect by all who knew him and worked with him.
