Initiative’s Ian Smith departs to take GM role at News Corp

Initiative’s head of partnerships Ian Smith has departed the company after nine months, to take up a new role as general manager of trading, national sales at News Corp.

The announcement comes a week after News Corp’s national general manager of trading Nick Durrant joined Initiative in the newly-created position of national chief partnerships and investment officer.

The role at the IPG Mediabrands owned agency, was part of its ‘cultural branding positioning’, and was one in a series of senior appointments and changes this year.

Among the first senior appointments of following the restructure was Smith, who joined alongside Nick Wokes, Andrew Cambridge, Marcelle Gomez, and Ian Smith.

Prior to that, Smith spent almost 18 months at Ensemble as commercial director, and previously served at the Nine and Ten TV networks.

Lou Barrett, executive general manager of network sales at News Corp said she looked forward to working with Smith to maximise “innovative client solutions.”

“I’m delighted Ian has joined our team, with such a strong track record of success and a wealth of experience in managing strategic partnerships, large accounts and key relationships,” Barrett said.

Smith said of his new role: “I’m excited to join the News Corp family, and work alongside such a talented team. I look forward to working with our clients and agencies as we evolve and focus on the future.”
