Mumbrellacast: Beverley McGarvey & Rod Prosser on Ten ViacomCBS upfronts, and can we find a way out the talent crisis?

On this week's Mumbrellacast, Tim Burrowes, Calum Jaspan and Emma Shepherd join host, Damian Francis to talk about this week's news.

Ten ViacomCBS presented its 2022 upfronts this week, its first with an streaming component following the launch of Paramount+ two months ago. It kicked things off with some statements and promises around diversity, inclusion and sustainability even before it had gotten into any content or technology. In the content department, the business presented a mix of renewed and new formats, with Survivor Australia, Gogglebox, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here, Have You Been Paying Attention?, The Amazing Race, and The Bachelor franchises all returning, plus new formats in Would I Lie To You? Australia, and Hunted, amongst others. It also announced it has secured the FA Cup rights, adding to its growing portfolio of football. The team wraps up all the content announcements, plus some tech talk following the Dynamic e-Trade Placements and Happy Hour announcements.

A timely report from IAB Australia found that job vacancy rates for digital advertising and ad tech industry roles have more than doubled in the last 12 months, to reach 9.8%, this being driven by several contributing factors, including strong market growth, changes in visa rules, lack of incoming talent due to border restrictions, and the entry of new large global organisations into the local market. This followed director of content, Damian Francis’ Best of the Week newsletter and subsequent opinion piece this week, on the same topic, that received strong feedback from senior industry executives. Pedestrian Group CEO Matt Rowley also recently wrote on Mumbrella about The Great Resignation – an expectation that post-pandemic there will be significant amounts of resignations. All of this culminates in a discussion around how deep the crisis runs, and whether there is an easy exit out of it.

Finally, an interview with Ten ViacomCBS co-leads, chief content officer and executive vice president Beverly McGarvey and chief sales officer, Rod Prosser to discuss the upfronts, network shares, the rest of the upcoming content slate, getting a return on the investment in football, with the pickup of the FA Cup, whether a push for the English Premier League rights is likely, Ten’s network share, and how it stacks up against its rivals in the digital registration space, and Paramount+ progress and the likelihood that we see more ad integrations at some stage.
