Peter Vogel promoted to MEC Asia Pacific CEO with James Hier named new Australian boss

Peter VogelGroup M media agency MEC has today announced James Hier will step up to the role of CEO of MEC in Australia with Peter Vogel to move to a regional role as APAC CEO of MEC.

Vogel has been in the role since 2010 and has led a revival within MEC which last year won the $60m media account for Nestle from ZenithOptimedia and was also shortlisted for the 2015 media agency of the year at the Mumbrella Awards.

For most of Vogel’s rein at MEC Hier has been strategy director at the agency and has also fronted the high profile AANA marketing dividends series on Sky News Business.

The move also rules Vogel out of the running to fill the position of CEO of GroupM left vacant following the retirement of John Steedman earlier this year.

“MEC is a brilliant agency with an incredibly strong and successful management team. James brings valuable strategic and digital experience as well as robust management experience to the role and so was absolutely the best person to succeed me,” said Vogel, in a statement.

“With James at the helm, I’m confident that MEC will continue to thrive, grow and innovate, delivering on our ambition to be our clients’ most valued business partner.

James Hier said: “I am thrilled to take on this role and thank Peter for his confidence and guidance. It’s an exciting time for MEC in Australia and New Zealand.

“We have excellent talent and a focused business strategy in the areas of data management, content development and tech innovation. Our capabilities to develop personalised customer engagement on mass will help our clients grow their brands and businesses.”

In the last five years MEC the agency has doubled in size, with notable new business successes such as Nestlé, Netflix, Domino’s Pizza, Allianz, Channel 7, Blackmores, South Australia Government, Combe, Menarini, RSPCA and Tiffany.

In late June MEC restructured its Adelaide operation, where it has the South Australian government and Mitsubishi, with Peter Bucklow stepping into a chairman’s role and Royce Zygarlicki joining the agency in the role of MEC Adelaide managing director.
