Podcast downloads hit record high of 52.2m as top 4 remains unchanged

Podcast downloads have hit a new record in May, jumping up to 52.2 million, surpassing the previous record set in March of 50 million, and up 4 million from April, as measured by Triton’s Podcast Metrics measurement service.

The top four most downloaded shows remained the same yet again, with Audioboom’s Casefile True Crime podcast hanging on to the top spot on the list. ARN/iHeartPodcast Network Australia’s Stuff You Should Know remained at #2, Hamish & Andy #3 and The Kyle & Jackie O Show rounding out the mainstay top four.

The monthly Australian Podcast Ranker lists the top 100 podcasts from participating publishers for listeners in Australia, as well as ranking the top 10 publishers through 1 May to 31 May.

The top ten was largely unchanged, with Schwartz Media’s 7AM podcast reclaiming fifth spot after dropping a place for two consecutive months.

Participating publishers in the Australian Ranker include ARN/iHeartMedia, Audioboom, Babyology, Equity Mates, Kinderling Kids Radio, News Corp Australia, Nine, Nova, Podshape, Schwartz Media, Southern Cross Austereo, Sports Entertainment Network, Stitcher Media, TOFOP Productions, Wavelength Creative, West Australian Newspapers, and Wondery.

Taking out the top spot, once again

The highest debutant on the list was Acast’s Equity Mates, at #35, another business podcast, which hears hosts Byrce and Alec break down investing and business into accessible terms. The Equity Mates joined the Acast podcast network in April, this being the show’s first survey since then.

The biggest mover in the top 100 list was Nova Entertainment’s What the Flux, a five minute breakdown of the top three Australian or global business news stories, hosted by Brett and Justin Joffe. It moved to #41, jumping 23 spots.

ARN/iHeartPodcast Network Australia dominated the top ten, with five shows, including three out of the top four, with the network also taking the overall top spot in raw download figures of 12.8 million. Second place was Southern Cross Austereo with 9.11 million followed by Audioboom.

The top ten publishers remained unchanged, outside of Wondery and Nova swapping places, and Schwartz Media returning to tenth spot.

Podcast download numbers have been on a steady rise since December, which saw downloads drop by 12 million over a two month period. May’s record high also sees a 12 million rise from the same month last year.
