State of Origin finishes with 1.792M metro viewers, up from last year

The third and final match of 2022’s State of Origin between NSW and Queensland brought in an average metro audience of 1.792 million viewers to Nine on Wednesday night.

It was the top program in overall TV viewing and entertainment, with the game also winning all three key advertising demos.

The game was the highest rating match since game one in 2019, with a live BVOD audience of 463,000, and a total TV audience of 3.048 million viewers.

The metro audience was up on the 2021 final game which had 1.746 million viewers, while the 2020 series-decider final was watched by 1.882 million viewers. An average of 2.002 million watched game three in 2019, also a series-deciding game.

Nine’s Director of Sport, Brent Williams, said: “Congratulations to the NRL and the players involved in last night’s State of Origin Decider. It provided edge-of-your-seat entertainment and captivated the nation, proving once again that Origin is a sporting event without rival in this country.

“To break the record for highest live streamed event in Australia not once, but twice, in the same series is an incredible achievement.”

Nine had a dominant 49.2% network share, with Seven bringing in 18.2% and ABC beating Ten’s share with 13.3% with Ten finishing up on 11.8%.

The network also won the primary channel share with 42.6%, and the top-rating multi-channel on Wednesday was 7TWO with a share of 2.7%.

Second in non-news programming on Wednesday was the State of Origin pre-match, watched by 835,000 metro viewers. That was followed by State of Origin post-match coverage brought in 706,000 metro viewers.

In the latest Daily Consolidated Total TV Report for 6 July, Seven News was the #1 program nationally across linear, with 1.550 million viewers, including 41,000 on BVOD, and an uplift of 3%. The biggest uplift of the week was Big Brother viewed by 711,000 viewers, and an uplift of 41%.

Looking at Wednesday’s ratings, next in entertainment was The Chase Australia with 508,000 metro viewers, followed by Nine’s Hot Seat, which brought in 425,000 metro viewers, while Gruen on ABC was watched by 416,000 metro viewers.

As mentioned, the State of Origin game 3 match was the #1 metro program on Wednesday, followed by Seven News with 923,000 metro viewers. Seven News at 6:30 had 877,000 viewers, followed by Nine News at 6:30 with 814,000, and Nine News with 804,000 metro viewers.  ABC News brought in 557,000, and ABC’s 7:30 aired to 452,000 metro viewers.
