Sydney radio ratings: Kiis FM wins FM battle, as new drive show Will & Woody grabs 11% share

Kiis FM’s new drive-time show with Will McMahon and Woody Whitelaw has overtaken rivals in Sydney, with a hefty 1.9 ratings point boost to an 11% share.

GfK’s survey two results put Will & Woody ahead of long-standing Nova drive show hosts Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold as well as 2Day FM’s Kate Langbroek and Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes for the first time since launch earlier this year.

The duo commenced their show on Kiis FM earlier this year

In the latest survey, Kate, Tim & Marty dipped 0.3 points to a 10.2% share while Hughesy & Kate’s drive time share lifted 0.3 points to a 5.5% share.

This survey period ran from 11 February to 3 March, and 11 March to 14 April.

The competition between ARN’s WSFM and Nova’s Smooth FM also heated up in the drive-time slot, with shares of 8.9% and 8.3% respectively.

Triple M’s new national drive show with Mick Molloy and Jane Kennedy showed modest growth, up 0.4 points to a 5.9% share.

Over in breakfast, survey two produced promising results for 2Day FM’s new breakfast show of Em Rusciano, Grant Denyer and Ed Kavalee – up one ratings point to a 4.4% share.

Since launch this year, the show has seen incremental increases, rising 0.6 points in survey one.

But the 2Day FM trio are still well behind competitors in the timeslot. Kiis FM’s Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson leapt 2.3 ratings points to a 12.3% share, making the duo the most-listened-to FM breakfast show in Sydney.

The result is the second-highest share result for the show since it joined Kiis FM. In 2016, the duo posted a 12.5% share – its highest since joining the network.

ARN’s other station, WSFM, sat in second place on the FM bandwidth, with Amanda Keller and Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones pulling an 8.1% share, 0.9 points down from last survey.

The station still beat Smooth FM’s breakfast show with Bogart Torelli and Glenn Daniel, which finished with a 6.6% share for survey two.

Nova FM’s Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli and Ryan Fitzgerald showed a modest boost, up 0.4 points to a 6.9% share. Triple M’s Grill Team with Gus Worland, Matty Johns, Chris Page and Emma Freedman also climbed slightly, up 0.5 points to a 6.5% share.

But overall, it was 2GB’s Alan Jones who continued to lead breakfast radio in Sydney, his share falling 1.2 points to 14.3%.

Macquarie Media’s recently replaced Talking Lifestyle format – now known as Macquarie Sports Radio – climbed 0.7 points in breakfast, to a 4.4% share.

Overall, 2GB pinched another Sydney win with a total share of 11.5%. Its nearest rival was Kiis FM, which with the help of Will & Woody and Kyle & Jackie O, climbed 1.4 points to a 9.5% share.

Nova’s Smooth FM and ARN’s WSFM sit within 0.1 points of one another after the latest survey. Total shares are 8.5% and 8.4% respectively.

Nova FM still sits comfortably ahead of 2Day FM in total audience, with a share of 6.9%. But thanks to the growth in 2DayFM breakfast and a slight increase in the newly extended drive-time format, 2Day FM’s share climbed 1.1 ratings points to a 5.2% share.

The result also comes after 2Day FM made major changes to its music format. Across the workday, 2Day FM saw strong growth, up 1.2 points between 9am and 12pm, and 1.3 points between 12pm and 4pm.

Triple M finished with a total share of 5.9%.
