Sydney radio ratings: New 2Day FM breakfast show with Em, Grant and Ed sees 0.6 point share boost

2DayFM’s revived breakfast slot with Em Rusciano, Ed Kavalee and Grant Denyer boosted the station’s breakfast share by 0.6 points to 3.4%.

Although the 3.4% share was still behind other stations at breakfast, the show was the only FM breakfast slot – other than Smooth FM – to see an increase in share.

The Em, Grant and Ed Show is the station’s latest attempt to improve its breakfast format

The result of 2DayFM breakfast is a much needed push in the right direction, after the show’s “under-performance” was cited as a reason behind owner Southern Cross Austereo’s (SCA) profit fall.

Smooth FM breakfast with Bogart Torelli and Glenn Daniel finished with at 6.8% share, a slight increase from last year’s 6.5%.

But overall, it was 2GB’s Alan Jones which took out another survey win, extending his lead over FM rivals, up 2.2 ratings points to a 15.5% share.

The result put Jones comfortably ahead of FM’s leading breakfast show, with Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson. The show returned to a 10% share after posting its second-highest share result since joining Kiis at the end of last year – 12.1%.

Kiis FM’s Kyle & Jackie O was ahead of ARN’s other network, WSFM. WSFM’s Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones and Amanda Keller fell one ratings point to a 9% share for the first survey of the year.

Nova 96.9’s Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald and Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli fell 0.9 points to a 6.5% share and Triple M’s breakfast show with The Grill Team – Gus Worland, Matthew Johns, Chris Page and Emma Freedman, shed 1.9 points, bringing its breakfast share to 6%. Co-host Mark Geyer departed at the end of last year.

Macquarie Media’s recently axed Talking Lifestyle format finished the survey at 3.4%, an 0.1 point difference from the end of last year. The station will now be sports-focused.

In drive, the move of former Kiis FM drive show hosts Dave Hughes and Kate Langbroek to an extended drive time slot on 2dayFM, has had an immediate impact on Kiis FM, with its Sydney drive time share falling 1.7 points to a 9.1% share.

Kiis FM’s new drive show hosts Will McMahon and Woody Whitelaw fell behind Nova 96.9’s Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold, which finished with a 10.5% share, up 0.2 points.

The new Kiis FM drive-time show was also behind WSFM’s drive show with Jason Staveley, which climbed 0.4 points to 9.2%. But it had a higher share than Smooth FM’s drive show with Byron Webb. Smooth FM’s drive show ended survey one with an 8.8% share.

Meanwhile over on 2DayFM, the departure of long-time drive show hosts Hamish Blake and Andy Lee saw a 0.3 point pull back in share, to 5.2%. SCA’s chief content boss Guy Dobson had already anticipated Hughesy & Kate would not be able to transfer their Kiis audience across immediately.

Triple M’s new national drive show, with Mick Molloy and Jane Kennedy finished with a 5.5% share for first survey. In the lead up to the show – The Chaser Team – which ran at 3pm, posted a 6.1% share.

Overall, Macquarie Media’s 2GB dominated survey one, up 0.5 points to an 11.8% share.

The decline in ratings from Kyle & Jackie O and Will & Woody on Kiis FM, had an impact on total share for the station, which fell 1.8 points to 8.1% share.

WSFM won the FM bandwidth, climbing 0.7 points to 9% ahead of Smooth FM’s 8.5% share. Meanwhile, Nova FM remained relatively stagnant, finishing with at 7.4%.

SCA’s two stations, Triple M and 2DayFM both completed survey one above a 4% share, 2DayFM up 0.2 points to 4.1% and Triple M down 1.3 points to a 4.9% share.
