Vegemite vs Marmite vs Vegemite vs Marmite

Dr Mumbo likes four things: Vegemite, repetition, publicity opportunities, and repetition.

And Vegemite has delivered on all fronts, with its latest jab at Marmite in the British press.

Marmite started the war back in July, framing The Ashes cricket test as a battle between the two yeasty spreads. Next up, Vegemite took out an ad in the UK tabloid The Mirror, contending “Vegemite tastes like a come-from-behind victory by 251 runs… you won’t like the taste of Vegemite”.

Marmite returned fire with a reference to the Aussie team’s ball-tampering, also in The Mirror.

So, that must mean it’s Vegemite’s turn.

This time, the brand has taken part in the “tasty battle” by claiming those wearing the traditional red and yellow colours at Lord’s – signalling membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club – now in fact secretly support Vegemite.

Vegemite said it was an “unexpected twist in the battle for yeasty pride”, but still had a statement at the ready.

Team Vegemite?

“We are flattered that the members of the home of cricket have been showing their support for Vegemite for years. We’re only sorry we didn’t give them the recognition they deserve for supporting Vegemite until now. We’re not sure how Marmite must feel, knowing that the MCC Members openly prefer the taste of Australia,” said Matt Gray, Vegemite spokesperson.

Dr Mumbo can’t wait for the next unexpected move from Marmite.
