Mumbrellacast: Female CEO movements, streaming in Australia and CRA’s hunt for a new head

Over the weekend there was the announcement of two new female CEOs in the advertising world, with Sheryl Marjoram returning to Australia from McCann London to join DDB Sydney and with Kirsty Muddle also stepping into the CEO role at Cummins & Partners. This has followed a number of senior female appointments across the advertising industry in recent months. The team breaks down these recent moves, as well as discussing the current conditions for women moving into senior roles, what progress has been made, and where it is still needed.

Earlier this week, Deloitte published its tenth edition of the Media Consumer Survey which showed that 47% of Australians are willing to view advertising on their streaming services in exchange for a discount, while in a Year13 study, 32% of Gen Z respondents said they spend one-to-two hours on a streaming service daily. With Foxtel finally this morning revealing the details of its long-rumoured news streaming service, Flash, the team discussed the state of streaming in Australia off the back of these reports, and what Foxtel is planning with its new service.

Rounding off the news chat, Joan Warner, Commercial Radio Australia’s long serving CEO will step down at the end of March next year. She has been in the role since 2001 with CRA revealing today its board asked Warner to stay through to the end of Q1 next year after she initially intended to finish at the end 2021. So what does this mean for CRA? And who is likely to step into the role in 2022?

Plus, Calum Jaspan interviews Nine’s chief sales officer, Michael Stephenson and head of content, production and development, Adrian Swift following last week’s Upfront. The conversation touches on several topics off the back of the virtual presentation, including whether the upcoming content slate is “playing it safe” as suggested by some media buyers, if there are plans to shift prime time bookings to Nine Galaxy, what Stephenson can do to encourage buyers to move across to the platform, and if Nine has any interest in the upcoming English Premier League rights.
