Ten’s Wake Up in trouble or doing brilliantly?

Peter MeakinDr Mumbo is an avid reader of both The Sunday Telegraph and The Australian’s Media section but he couldn’t help but spot a noticeable discrepancy in the spin Ten’s new Head of News Peter Meakin was putting to the publications about the future of Ten’s breakfast program Wake Up.

According to the Sunday Telegraph yesterday Meakin was quoted as saying:

“Any show that rates the way Wake Up does obviously does not have a long term future and that’s just a fact,” Meakin, in his first official interview, said.

“It’s looking at maybe another six months unless it starts to do a lot better.”

However, Ten’s ex officio PR man Darren Davidson had a slightly different interpretation:

Commenting on reports Wake Up has just six months to improve ratings to avoid the dreaded axe, Meakin downplayed the idea and said he would look to make some changes in a “softly, softly” fashion.

“Six months is not a deadline,” Meakin said. “Commercial television being what it is and even with a network as patient as Channel 10, something has to give. You can’t just live with those figures forever.”

Meakin has been encouraged by recent audience gains, with Wake Up attracting is third-biggest audience to date on Thursday across the five capital cities with 53,000 viewers.

Amazing the difference a day makes.

Meakin also said he would try adding a new presenter to Wake Up. Dr Mumbo has a feeling that may have already been tried though.
