Tourism NT chief marketing officer departs

The chief marketing officer of Tourism NT, Tony Quarmby, has departed after more than seven years with the organisation, Mumbrella can reveal.

A Tourism NT spokesperson confirmed his departure on Monday afternoon.

“After seven successful years leading the destination marketing function of Tourism NT, Tony Quarmby has left the business to seek new challenges and opportunities,” the spokesperson said in a written statement to Mumbrella.

“This provides a new phase for tourism in the Northern Territory and an opportunity to refresh it’s approach to marketing the destination.”

Quarmby told Mumbrella his time at Tourism NT was the most challenging yet rewarding experience in destination marketing he’s had.

He said with a new government, new department, and new CEO, it became clear to him that a change was necessary, and it was time to move on.

While Quarmby is in conversations for a new full-time gig, he is doing marketing consultancy work in the interim.

Quarmby first joined Tourism NT in 2012, and did a three year stint as its director of domestic operations. He then went to Tourism Tasmania for nearly two years, before returning to Darwin as Tourism NT’s GM of marketing in 2017.

Under his leadership, the tourism body won numerous marketing and tourism industry awards, including two gongs at last year’s Mumbrella Travel Marketing Awards.

In 2019, he moved the brand away from its long-standing ‘Do the NT’ tagline in a bid to differentiate itself from other tourism marketing campaigns, and led a brand refresh which included the rework of its logo.

In 2021, Tourism NT introduced the ‘Seek Different’ tagline, with a number of campaigns that followed the brand platform.

Other campaigns during his tenure have included TV personalities Abbie Chatfield and Poh Ling Yeow, and have leveraged pop culture moments included the recent launch of Netflix’s Territory series.

Quarmby has spent nearly 30 years in marketing, with almost a decade of that in tourism marketing. Alongside Tourism Tasmania, he has held roles at Tourism Sunshine Coast, Tourism Queensland, as well as New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, and Green Realm Travel.
