‘We’re all part of the story’: The National Australia Day Council touts inclusivity in new ad for 26 January
A new ad for Australia Day has appeared across TV screens, celebrating the diversity of the ‘Australian Story’.
The ad features people from various cultural backgrounds, including several Indigenous Australians, and acknowledges the ‘painful’ and ‘raw’ history of the nation.
The ad comes following years of growing debate over the date of Australia’s national day. 26 January marks the anniversary of the First Fleet’s arrival at Port Jackson in New South Wales in 1788, a date Indigenous Australians mark as Invasion Day, Survival Day or Day of Mourning. The #Changethedate campaign argues that the date of Australia Day should be moved to show respect for the hundreds of years of suffering and inequality experienced by Aboriginal people, which began on 26 January, 1788.
The new advertisement is set to a poem which states the story of Australia Day is the story of every person that resides in the nation. It includes the lines “In parts it is painful, In parts it is raw”, and “It tells of many people, From far and wide, And that have who’ve been here, Since the beginning of time”, spoken by Indigenous Australians.
The ad concludes with the line “We’re all part of the story” and the slogan “Reflect. Respect. Celebrate.”
The ad is attributed to the National Australia Day Council. The council has been contacted by Mumbrella for comment.
The full poem can be read here:
The story of Australia
Is the story of me
It’s the story of you
It’s the story of weIn parts it is painful
In parts it is raw
It others it’s beautiful
Inspiring great aweIt tells of many people
From far and wide
And those who’ve been here
Since the beginning of timeIt brings us together
And tears us apart
We all have our views
So where do we start?
By listening to each other
And sharing our part
Please correct the last line:
“..and sharing our part”
Thanks

Thanks for flagging. This has been corrected.

Hi Viv, also the campaign video states ‘We’re all part of the story’ not ‘We’re all a part of the story’.

Our story could be made less painfull and less raw simply by changing the date of Australia Day. Is it that much to ask? And by the way these lyrics are just the worst fucking cornball!

Thanks, again!
All sorted now.

What are they thinking! BBQs and a family eating meat. One of the main cause of climate change is animal agriculture: methane, land clearing and animal transportation. Our country is burning and they put a meat BBQs in the advertising, why can’t people join the dots? This propaganda showing happy familes eating dead animals while they celebrate Australia Day, is barbaric! Try having a family celebration without death!

There is nothing more UnAustralian than cooking meat, on a barbecue, on Australia Day. What kind of UnAustralians are you portraying in this ad? Mother of mercy. Shame on you.

Seriously, 9 comments and 2 are offended vegans and 1 is outraged about life in general.
How about we all celebrate Australia Day together by driving your car, bike or whatever with you headlights on, light up on the 25th, 26th and 27th January.
The majority of us are proud Aussies.

Seriously, 9 comments and 2 are from vegans who are outraged, and 1 from another who is permanently offended.
Here’s an idea, everyone who wants to celebrate Australia Day and contribute……on the 25th, 26th and 27th January drive with your headlights on… your car your bike your bus whatever.
Send a message to the outraged and offended.

Hear Hear Bravo Zulu…. I for one am looking forward to the Sunday BBQ, booze and having the Monday off! When did we all get so soft and outraged?
If you’re vegan, have a bloody tofu / fake meat burger and let the rest of us enjoy it.

Condemning meat eating on Australia Day. There may be bigger issues to think about.

Well done it brings tears to my eyes when I see the unity that is starting.

While I applaud the attempt to promote diversity, I think this attempt to quell the growing movement to “Change the Date” misses the essential point behind that movement. In recent years I was exposed to a lot of information about Australian history which sparked my thirst for more knowledge. This has led me to gain greater knowledge and understanding about the “Hidden Truth” of some of the uglier aspects of Australia’s history following colonisation.
This also led me to research the very, short history behind the choice of 26 January as “Australia Day”.
The fact is there is only a very short history for using this date. We didn’t fight under the flag for it or any such nonsense. (I am ex-military) The reality is that the actual date has far more negative history for Australia’s Indigenous population than the majority of our population can truly understand.
I fully support the “Change the Date” movement and I suspect more and more Australians will as they understand the truth behind the issue.

Hello,
Any chance would you know if they have released a longer version of this ad?

One BIG, but not unexpected flaw, no apparent indigenous person at community BBQ gathering.?( Closing scene)

Why doesn’t this ad have the typical political authorisation disclaimer at the end? While NADC is a not-for-profit, they are still owned by the Government and are still trying to push a political opinion. Seems a bit dishonest not to have it.

By apparent, you’re referring to skin colour, right. Perhaps you should have a look at this.

Why is no-one prepared to put their name on this garbage? No-one from the government, no-one rom the Australia Day council, no-one from the agency or the production company, not a single person who wants their name attached to it. Speaks volumes. #changethedate scared little snowflakes!

We’re All Part of the Story. Reflect – Respect – Celebrate.
Congratulations to those responsible for one of the most important campaigns in Australia for the Australian population in many years.

Makes me feel so sad. Why can’t we just change the date? What the indigenous people of this country have been through is hideous. Change the date so that Australia Day can truly be a day to celebrate our diversity. At the very least it would be a good start.

So where is that “listening to each other” being enacted genuinely in our national public conversation? I feel very disillusioned by a government that fails to adopt the Uluru statement but somehow find the resources for a touchy feely ad campaign.

You’re happy to call people snowflakes while you hide behind anonymity. Be brave tough guy/gal. Name yourself. No? Pathetic garbage.

Name yourself? Or are you too weak? Yeah. No chance you’ll put your name to your post is there?

I see you didn’t post your name to your comment. Speaks volumes.

Ahhh, because Invasion Day isn’t political.

Like you I’m outraged that a bunch of middle aged white people didn’t put their names to this work. If you could just add you name and address I’m sure people would appreciate it.

You you I hear what you say but I’m going to ignore it while I have a BBQ

Maybe you should stop preaching and start listening.
How would you feel you were removed from your family as a small child? Would it still be raw?

I have just watched your “We’re all part…. ” for Australia Day. I just wanted to say that I am so impressed with the content. It is just perfect. I love the whole thing. It’s how most Australians are and I hope this will make sure that all of us are one. I love this country and always will.

And just to be totally picky, the words (in the script) should be ‘listening to one another’.

Hi Robyn, there were 3 versions – 1 x 60″ & 2 different 30″s – one of the 30″s had the aboriginal elder Miriam in it, the other did not. 2 x 30″s provided more air time. They rotated equally.
