Ninemsn launches mixed martial arts site MMA Kanvas

Ninemsn has launched a mixed martial arts site called MMA Kanvas.

The announcement:

Today ninemsn has launched Australia’s first dedicated Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) news site – MMA Kanvas – giving Australia’s rapidly growing fan base unparalleled access to one of the world’s most popular action sports.

Hosted on ninemsn’s Wide World of Sports, MMA Kanvas features the latest mixed martial arts news from around the world, with a strong Australian angle, plus exclusive video content, interviews and an industry-first real-time social sharing hub.

“Mixed Martial Arts is one of the fastest growing sports in the world,” said Adam Ireland, MMA Kanvas Director. “It’s gone mainstream – and there is a huge appetite amongst fans locally in this market.

“MMA Kanvas will provide followers of the sport with the latest news, stories and fighter info that Australian fans want to read about.”

A new digital destination for Australian action sports fans, MMA Kanvas will provide a mix of original and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) produced content, including:

  • News, interviews, fighter profiles, fitness, nutrition and advice from MMA experts
  • Video previews of upcoming bouts  plus a dedicated events section to keep the community up to date with upcoming cards and live results
  • Regular opinion and analysis of the latest news and fight results, plus fan-created content

In a first for the sport, the site will also feature Kanvas LIVE powered by Stackla – a unique social sharing hub that will connect sports fans with MMA content and conversations from across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instragram, all in one place.

“Australia loves MMA. We wanted to tap into this passion for the sport by creating a site where fans can create and share content and engage with the community, as the action happens,” continued Ireland.

A big fan of the action sport, Adam who was previously a ninemsn employee took a commercial proposal for MMA Kanvas to the team at ninemsn. Through their Entrepreneurship Program, ninemsn then helped Adam turn the concept into a reality.

“Adam’s passion combined with a great opportunity to tap into the growing popularity of the sport provided a strong business case for us” said Hal Crawford, ninemsn Editor in Chief.

The sport is viewed in over 130 countries and one billion households worldwide. Already one of the more searched sports in Australia according to the latest results from Bing, recent big drawcard events for MMA in Sydney have sold out in less than half an hour.

The addition of mixed martial arts content with MMA Kanvas further widens ninemsn’s expansion into online properties skewed towards a predominantly young male audience.
