Matilda Bay launches Dirty Granny cider

Matilda Bay, the brewer that makes Beez Neez, Fat Yak and Barking Flamingo beers, has launched a brand of cider.

Called Dirty Granny, the matured apple cider, which has a “rich and full flavour which combines sweetness and acidity”, is being promoted using PR, by Liquid Ideas, experiential marketing, by District, and point of sale.

As part of the launch, the brand has created an event called the World Extreme Crochet Championships.

The event, which will see an extreme underwater crocheter,  parachuting crocheter and snowboarding crocheter compete to create the best Dirty Granny pattern, will be hosted by comedian Tommy Little and a contortionist called Frodo.

Jamie Fox, marketing manager at Matilda Bay told Mumbrella: “We don’t have the money to spend on billboards and TV. We’re a company that likes to have a joke and poke fun at advertising and media. I was watching MTV and saw a show on extreme ironing – which gave me the idea for the World Extreme Crochet Championships.”

Fox added that the cider category was experiencing double-digit growth in Australia, hence the launch. An Australian ale may be the next new product on the cards from Matilda Bay, he revealed.
