Former Clems and Patts creative James Proctor has returned from a three-year stint in Asia to set up his own agency in Melbourne.

Called One Small Step Collective, the brand and communications agency has been co-founded by Proctor and former client marketer John Williams.

Proctor came home in June after an 11-month stint at TBWA in Hong Kong.

In a summary of his agency on Proctor’s LinkedIn profile, he writes: “Business has changed. Consumers have changed. Communication has changed. But Agencies still have the same model that was built in the 50’s.”

“We believe a new model is required. We’re a branding and communications company that’s built for today. We still do the things that most advertising agencies do, we just do them differently.”

“Using technology and experience, our offering is based on different fundamentals- flexibility, creativity, speed and value. We have taken the step that we would recommend to all modern business – be nimble, be adaptable and build yourself around your customers,” he said.

A hotel concierge by training, Proctor started out in advertising as a copywriter at Clemenger BBDO Melbourne in 1998, where he spent the first eight years of his career.

He spent two years at what was then known as Cummins Nitro as creative director, then just over a year at GPY&R, where he was also CD. During his stint in Asia, he ran the creative departments of Y&R and Ogilvy in Singapore.

Williams co-launches One Small Step Collective having spent the last six years running his own consultancy, Navigate 21. In his career, he has run design agency Disegno as CEO and worked in senior marketing roles at Cadbury and Detpak Group.
