M&C Saatchi promotes directors into new management partner roles
M&C Saatchi has announced the appointment of a new management team following the departure of chief executive Mike Abel.
Tom Dery, worldwide chairman M&C Saatchi, said the agency made the decision not to appoint a direct replacement for Abel, instead promoting seven senior staff into the new roles of management partners.
They will report into Dery and Tom McFarlane, M&C Saatchi’s regional creative director.
“We wanted to give some of our senior people the opportunity to grow and develop. I’ll essentially be the CEO,” he told Mumbrella.
The new leadership team consists of:
- Dave Brown, managing director M&C Saatchi Melbourne
- Christine Gardner, client services director
- Jeff Krug, chief financial officer
- Colin Jowell, strategic planning director
- Richard Morewood, client services director
- Ben Welsh, executive creative director, Sydney
- David Whittle, CEO Mark
Dery said: “Our new leadership team is made up of seven experienced executives who will have management responsibility for various parts of the business in addition to their normal portfolio responsibilities.”
Abel was appointed CEO of M&C Saatchi’s Australian operations in October 2008. Prior to that he was chief operating officer at Ogilvy South Africa.
He recently returned to his native South Africa to launch a new office as part of M&C Saatchi’s ’s global network.
Management by committee…who is reposnsible for that…..how long will this last.

1 female promoted out of 7. Not much has changed since the Mad Men days has it?
I’d estimate that M&C Saatchi’s staff makeup is 70% female and yet still it remains a boys club in the boardroom.
Shame shame M&C
And you call yourself a progressive agency.
