Campaign highlights statistic of adults suffering from effects of childhood abuse

Adult Survivors of Child Abuse are urging the public to help those suffering from the impacts of child abuse in adult life in a new campaign from Matterhorn which highlights that one in four adults suffer from the effects of childhood abuse or trauma.

The campaign’s website asks viewers to log into Facebook in an effort to visually represent the statistic using a users Facebook friend list. Complementing the website is an online film and TV spot with print and social media further supporting the campaign.

Matterhorn’s Garry Horner said: “The horrible truth is that as many as one in four adult Australians suffer from the effects of childhood abuse or trauma, that’s nearly 5 million people, which is quite staggering. There is a very good likelihood that one of your close friends is a survivor of childhood abuse and is probably suffering in silence, they need your help.

“Facebook was the perfect place to try and enlist the help of people to come to the aid of their friends. We designed and built the website, using Facebook Connect and HTML 5 animation and audio techniques to bring the experience alive. We are so grateful for all the help and advice we got from Facebook both here and in the States and are really proud of what we have achieved.”

Commenting on the campaign, Cathy Kezelman, president of ASCA said: “Garry, Matt and I known each other for a number of years, when they presented us with the new campaign i was impressed by the power, poignancy and simplicity of the message. And the ingenuity of the delivery. We couldn’t be more excited with the end result. They share our passion for the needs of adult survivors of childhood abuse and trauma and this campaign will undoubtedly change lives and that’s no mean feat.”
