Cancer Council anti-smoking ad: is this how they see you?
Cancer Council Western Australia has launched an anti-smoking campaign that pushes the idea that smokers are being marginalised since they have to smoke outside.
The ad, called ‘How you’re seen’, shows how smokers are now typically judged by their partners, family and friends when they are smoking.
The agency behind the campaign was Perth agency Gatecrasher. It was directed by Grant Sputore through Penguin Empire.
Excellent. I’ve been saying for a while now that anti-smoking ads need to move from health scares to the more personal, targeting how smokers are seen by others – and also attack the idea, that a lot of smokers still have, that they somehow look ‘cool’ when they smoke. Good work.

Puhleeze! This is how the very group who’s asking the question WANTS smokers to be seen and have created the situation they capitalize on now. It’s like putting up “Irish Need Not Apply” signs and then showing the Irish living in poverty in order to perpetuate how they are “undesireables.” It’s the anti-smoker groups that need to worry about THEIR decency.

When I worked for Royal Mail UK a decade ago there was a designated area six-foot square, painted yellow on the corner of a car-park reached by going down six flights of stairs into the cold (day or night). Amusing to watch the smokers jostling to get on it, more to enjoy the company of other smokers methinks than to feed their addiction. Hardly anyone smokes here these days though. Maybe that kind of thing works.

Instructions on how an industry (Big Pharma), governments and their parasitical mouthpieces (anti-smoker lobbyists) can increase their revenues :
Pick a once normal group of people, tax them to extortionist levels, punish them by kicking them out of hospitals, retirement homes, social gatherings, keep pushing the goal posts to further demonize and turn society, family and friends against them even in their own homes, cars and open spaces. Convince them that all this is their fault and if they don’t like it all they have to do is obey the dictates while constantly driving in the message that they’re desperate addicts. Right about then is the perfect time to offer them pharmaceutical products to make it all better.
Repeat as required with obese people and alcohol users.

This is pretty anodyne.
Surely hard hitting stories will be more likely to change behaviour…. and help smokers to break bad habits. Or is this a phase one of a bigger campaign, eg:
1) Let smokers know that their habit is bad – show them how others pity them. They are outcasts and therefore should be sad. (this ad.)
2) Let smokers know that their habit is bad – show them how others think they stink. They are dirty.
3) Remind smokers what those ugly images on the packet is there for and point them to a way to quit. Help them. “It won’t be easy to quit, but it’s worth it because here’s a reminder of the risk etc”

“At truth, we state the facts about Big Tobacco to inform people about the dangers of smoking. Maybe that’s because pointing out the shortcomings of an industry, whose products kill someone every 6.5 seconds in the world, just seems like the right thing to do. So if you’d like to help us, then please donate to the American Legacy Foundation the people who run truth.”

If beezlebub has less ”pathetic arguments” than ad homs and the ”tobacco industry shill” overused and no longer believable mantra, why doesn’t he use them? Contrary to beezlebub, Audrey and I used our real names that connect to our very real websites representing real grassroots groups who have nothing to hide or be ashamed of. Does the person hiding behind the beezlebub alias have anything to declare as competing interests that push him/her to be so hostile to people with opposing opinions?
