Alan Rusbridger: Liberty and Safety: Where Now For Freedom?

Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief of the Guardian, has led the charge on some of the most significant investigative journalism since Watergate. In this exclusive event, he will speak about the Guardian’s decision to publish documents leaked by Edward Snowden, the UK’s phone hacking scandal, the ethical and political ramifications of publishing leaked documents, the impact of government surveillance and consider the nature of press freedom today. He is uniquely placed to discuss the evolving role of the fourth estate, evaluating the public interest, the role of parliaments, privacy and the integrity of the web itself.

Alan Rusbridger has been Editor-in-Chief of the Guardian since 1995. The Guardian broke world exclusive stories by publishing NSA documents leaked by Edward Snowden and was recently awarded the Pulitzer Prize. The Guardian is now the world’s second most popular English language news website.

The lecture, which marks Guardian Australia’s first Guardian Live event, will be introduced by David Marr, the four-time Walkley award-winning Guardian Australia journalist.
