Multicultural broadcaster SBS has appointed 28-year-old Ben Naparstek as its head of editorial, online and emerging platforms.

Naparstek has been editor of Fairfax Media’s lifestyle publication Good Weekend since 2012 and prior to that was editor of national politics and culture magazine The Monthly.

“We’re thrilled to have Ben come on board in this important role as we continue to push the boundaries and explore new ways to bring SBS content to life online,” said Marshall Heald, director of TV and online.

“Ben brings some impressive experience to the position, as well as a clear commitment to producing high quality content and finding new ways to engage with audiences in a competitive media landscape. We welcome him to the team.”

In a statement announcing the appointment, Naparstek said: “While I’m sad to leave Fairfax, I’m thrilled to be joining an organisation that’s at the cutting edge of digital innovation while serving the nation’s diverse communities with first-rate journalism.

“This is an exciting time for SBS, and I look forward to maximising the audience for the network, across different platforms and devices, by experimenting with new ways of telling and delivering great stories.”

Naparstek last week drew criticism from Australian actress Caitlin Stasey, who claimed the editor chose to delay a feature on her after she refused to be photographed naked for the feature.

Naparstek defended the plan for Stasey to appear nude, arguing he envisioned that the feature would reflect “the beautiful imagery she’d published of herself” on Stasey’s own website.

He will commence the role at SBS on Monday August 10.
