Nine’s interview with Julia Gillard last night proved more appealing than Seven’s Sunday Night exclusive with another former PM, John Howard, with the program pulling in 1.19 million metro viewers, according to OzTam overnight ratings.

Julia Gillard: The Whole Truth, which aired at 7pm, even beat the X Factor which drew 1.09m viewers in its 7.30pm slot. Ray Martin’s interview with Australia’s first female PM was the second most watched show of the night, with only Nine’s The Block Glasshouse, watched by 1.27m viewers, proving more popular. The interview with John Howard at 8pm on Sunday pulled in 1.05m.

Nine and Seven shared the night, each taking a 22.8 per cent share on their main channels, while Network Ten’s 10.3 per cent was well beaten by the ABC which took an 11.5 share of the night’s audience.

While The Block: Glasshouse topped the night for Nine, audiences switched off when Big Brother came on immediately afterwards. But its audience of 717,000 was still higher than Sunday and Monday’s outing for the reality TV show.

Meanwhile, Seven’s Home and Away, which aired in the same 7pm time slot as Gillard, pulled in 980,000, just behind Winners & Losers which attracted 993,000. The Last Days of Brittany Murphy meanwhile at 9.40pm drew 496,000.

Ten’s highest ranking non-news show was Family Feud which was the 17th most watched show of the night with 564,000 metro viewers in its simulcast across three channels, while Jamie’s Comfort Food, broadcast at 7.30pm, was seen by 453,000. Under the Dome continued to struggle with only 304,000 viewers . ABC’s 8.30pm screening of Brilliant Creatures pulled in 597,000.

In the news category, Nine came out tops with an audience in the 6.30pm slot of 1.14m, an improvement on the 1.08m who tuned in at 6pm. Seven’s 6pm new bulletin drew 1.03m falling to 998,000 for Today Tonight at 6.30pm.
