Seven wins biggest audience but Nine News is top-rated show

Channel Nine logosevenSeven and Nine fought for audience share last night with Seven winning by just one per cent, with many of the most popular TV shows in all people.

However it was Channel Nine that had the top program of the night with Nine News the only program to score over 1m viewers, as OzTam recorded an average 1.035m in the preliminary overnight metro ratings. Nine News was also the most watched program in Nine’s target demographic of people 25-54.

Meanwhile Seven News averaged 968,000 and Today Tonight,  which clashed with a one hour news bulletin on Channel Nine in Sydney, averaged 875,000 from 6.30pm to 7pm.

Seven topped the entertainment lineup with Border Security, Australia’s Front Line, the most watched non-news program of the night and drawing 2,000 more viewers than Nine had for A Current Affair.

Dog Patrol won the 7.30pm timeslot with an average 700,000 viewers and UK import Animal Airport, which followed, averaged 692,000, and was the most watched show at 8pm.

Meanwhile a new show on Channel Nine called World’s Scariest Holidays, was third in its timeslot and was 19th for the night with an average 449,000 metro viewers. A sneak peak of The Block: Fans V Faves, Nine’s new series for 2014, failed to make the top 20 programs at 8pm.

Ten’s strongest performer was Ten Eyewitness News, averaging 635,000 from 5pm, and its repeat episodes of Modern Family were second in the 7.30pm and 8pm timeslots after Channel Seven with 537,000 and 589,000 metro viewers. Modern Family was also the third most popular program in Ten’s target audience of people 25-54.

Nine’s repeats of US sitcoms The Big Bang Theory and 2 Broke Girls were second in the 8.30pm timeslot after Seven’s two episodes of Chicago Fire. However Nine won the 9.30pm timeslot with its Christmas film Fred Claus winning a metro audience of 448,000.

Seven won the night with a 20.5 per cent share of the audience while Nine was just behind with 19.5 per cent. Channel Ten just missed being third for the night with a 10.2 per cent share falling short of 10.8 per cent for ABC1.
