Showcase wins ASTRA Award Channel of the Year for US dramas
Foxtel drama channel Showcase was named channel of the year at the 2014 ASTRA Awards last night with US drama series such as Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and House of Cards cementing the channel’s success.
Drama categories of the year were won by FX for The Walking Dead, and UKTV for the acclaimed miniseries Top of The Lake co-produced by UKTV in Australia.
Women’s prison drama Wentworth won most outstanding Australian drama and the show’s Nicole Di Silva was presented the award for most outstanding performance.
Fox Sports won the innovation award for its Ref Cam, and sportscaster Kelli Underwood, of Back Page Live and ANZ Championship, was named most outstanding new talent.
A posthumous award paid tribute to Charlotte Dawson following her death last month. Dawson had been a judge on Australia’s Next Top Model on Fox8 for seven years and interviewed award winners backstage at the awards last year.
The 2014 Annual awards were held at Carriageworks in Sydney last night, hosted by Shyanna Blaze of Selling Houses Australia and Matt Shirvington. And Paul Murray hosted his Sky News show Paul Murray Live from the red carpet from 9pm.
Andrew Maiden, CEO of the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA), said the awards were the “most contested” in years.
“Everyone in the industry has had a brilliant evening recognising the quality, creativity and originality of content on subscription television,” he said.
