A new Australian film, The Sapphires, has been scheduled for 9 August nationwide release.

Its world premiere is scheduled for a Midnight screening in official selection at Cannes Film Festival with the Australian premiere announced as the opening film of Melbourne International Film Festival on 2 August

Directed by first time feature film-maker Wayne Blair, the film is produced by Goalpost Pictures’ Rosemary Blight and Kylie de Fresne with investment from Screen Australia.

The film stars Jessica Mauboy, Deborah Mailman, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell as the girl group members and Irish comedian Chris O’Dowd of The IT Crowd and Bridesmaids.

Hopscotch has unveiled a teaser and theatrical poster today.

Distributed by Hopscotch Films, the story has been adapted from the musical of the same name by Tony Briggs and Keith Thompson and is based on a real story, set in the 1960s about an Indigenous girl group plucked from the outback and sent to Vietnam to entertain the troops.
