Visit California. There’s cheese. Lots and lots of cheese
For all the criticisms (justified or otherwise) of Tourism Australia’s ad, it does have one thing going for it.
At least it’s not Visit California’s, which has just launched in Australia:

At least California’s advertising knows what it’s selling.

I actually thought it was pretty good, light-hearted, easy-going and gave a good feel for what California is about.
For some reason, it appears to be the ‘done thing’ to try and bash all forms of tourism ads no matter which Country/State they come from.
Why does the media feel some inherant need to critise these attempts at a region’s aim to self-promote… exactly the same happens in the UK, as does it here in Australia. Maybe its not the ad, but the fact that there is an attempt at self-promotion which is the root of the issue?

I really wanted the Governator to say something like “You’ll be back” at the end of it!

I didn’t mind it – great place for a holiday too. The drive around Hwy 1/Big Sur is amazing.

I can just hear all those consumers sitting in front of the TV watching the California Tourism ad, feeling disgruntled at the lack of creativity.. indignant at the plainness of the message delivery.. shocked at the waste of so many dollars on celebrity endorsement as telling substitute for a good core insight…
… as they reach for their laptop/iPad/iPhone to Google “California Holidays”
Sometimes “cheese” sells..

Haha I really like that ad, it’s creative and fun – shows off what they’ve got – I want to go there now!

Gotta say – I rather like it. Cheesy? Yes – but that’s what holidays are supposed to be, good fun.
+1 for the missed “You’ll be back” at the end 🙁

All those famous personalities and icons, a breezy feel good ad.

Is it me or does Maria Shriver now look like predator?

doesn’t look like too many are searching
The URL shown indicates it was for the UK market. “not sure” you’re search results appear to be from Australia only?

@not sure…
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing and all that.
Aside from the rather dumb assumption that that web-searches for something like [California] are directly related to tourism (Gay marriage issues? News anyone?) there’s also the issue that the campaign has *just launched*.

Visitors seem to love the cheesy cliches – viewing and visiting.
My wife dragged me to an ‘authentic’ Maori village in NZ.
As a Kiwi I thought it was naff. As an Aussie she loved it.

Hands up those who haven’t heard of Disneyland; Hollywood; Malibu; The Oscars; Entourage, etc? I’m not sure why they’d even bother advertising one of the most advertised places on earth. Nearly every 2nd word Kyle Sandliands says on 104.1 is LA. I can’t wait to take myself, oops, I mean my kids to Disneyland.

Greg, do you work in advertising? I only ask because it seems such a strange comment to ask why a brand would bother to advertise itself if it is well known… would you ask the same of Coke? IBM? Ford?

Aha! Found you Greg.. (I think.. at least it seems to be the same person.. same MO)

Come on guys, flaming is so 2009.
Yes it’s cheesy but that’s what people go for.
However for the British market, I think this TV series sums it up perfectly:

I actually thought it was nearly a good ad, but what was up with the whole ‘if this is your kind of job, when can you start?’ tag line…? It made ‘where the bloody hell are you?’ look like Shakespeare….and yes, Maria Shriver just looks scarey these days.

I wasn’t sure what they were selling, are they offering me a job (like South Australia often advertises)? Doesn’t make me want to go there in the slightest. It’s crap. But I often go against the grain – while I didn’t like the last aussie tourism ad, I think it will work o.s, not as good as Oprah but effective all the same…
