ACCC creates defective ad to educate customers about rights

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has created an ad filled with production errors, to educate customers about how to exercise their rights about defective products.

Put together by 3rdSpace, the ad sees an ACCC spokesperson explaining the rights in a piece to camera. But the piece to camera isn’t exactly perfect, with cameramen visible through glass windows, the presenter’s head being cut off whilst speaking and a microphone boom appearing in shot. She becomes increasingly frustrated as the ad progresses.

3rdSpace has created a number of obvious mistakes as well as a hidden one, that encourages the audience to engage more closely with the piece of work. The aim is to communicate the message, ‘make sure you get what you paid for’.

Rob Logan, head of content and founder at 3rdSpace, said it was a challenge for an experienced crew to make so many errors in a shoot.

“The original idea was to use a presenter with a down to earth tone, to tell consumers about the basics of the guarantee in a regular walk and talk format,” Logan explained.

“But at 3rdspace we’re on a mission to rid the world of bland content, so we decided to push the format into new areas by exploring a more comedic slant on delivering the message. This will keep consumers engaged to the end by challenging them to spot the mistakes.

ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said she was delighted by the response so far.

“This is clever, funny and engaging content, which we hope piques social audiences’ interest and starts more conversations about consumers’ rights to a repair, replacement or refund under the Australian Consumer Law,” Rickard said.

The campaign will run across online, social and digital channels.
