Developing story: Dell reports data breach
Technology giant Dell has confirmed a data breach involving customers’ names and physical addresses.
Dell notified customers by email on Friday morning stating that financial information, email addresses and telephone numbers had not been compromised.
The breach also involved information relating to Dell purchases, such as hardware and order information, item description, date of order and related warranty information. It has not been confirmed how many people have been affected.
“Upon identifying the incident, we promptly implemented our incident response procedures, began investigating, took steps to contain the incident and notified law enforcement,” Dell notified customers.
“We have also engaged a third-party forensics firm to investigate this incident.”
Dell said the breach does not pose a “significant risk”, and they are monitoring the situation.
Customers have been advised to watch out for suspicious activity related to their Dell accounts or purchases and report any concerns.
A Dell spokesperson told Mumbrella, “Dell Technologies has a cybersecurity program designed to limit risk to our environments, including those used by our customers and partners. Our program includes prompt assessment and response to identified threats and risks.”
“Although we don’t believe there is significant risk to our customers given the type of information involved, we are taking proactive steps to notify them as appropriate.”
The spokesperson did not respond to our question about the number of Australian customers affected.
