Digital agency CD wades into coal seam gas ‘war’ with online video campaign
Based around a protest march last Sunday, a video created by the creative director of digital agency webqem, Steve Whistler, has launched in support of the anti-CSG campaign. Whistler sits on the organising committee for Stop CSG Illawarra.
The campaign comes in response to the ‘We want CSG’ push, which is backed by the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association.

It launches as broadcaster Alan Jones waded in on the debate in the article in the Sydney Morning Herald this morning, describing the debate as “war”.
The campaign also counters the messaging of energy companies such as Santos, which pits CSG as “a fuel for the future” and a friend of local communities.

The anti-CSG campaign has been led by organisations such as Get Up Australia.
Don’t forget about the BIGTOS ad:

Fantastic! We all need to be aware of how significant this issue is locally and globally. ‘Fracking’ is detrimental to all of us and our land. The consistent actions of petroleum and energy companies misleading consumers and putting perceived profit in front of health and life needs to stop now! Cheers to Steve Whistler and webqem.

Then how else do you expect us to all benefit from such a versatile and abundant gas?

David, a few thought starters:
1. if it comes down to clean water and edible food vs CSG I’ll take the food and water any day. After all there are alternatives to CSG.
2. Not everything has to be exploited for finanical benefit, especially when the social cost is so high.
3. Methane is also a versatile and abundant gas. And yes, around a third of humans produce around half a litre of methane a day. Should we also be exploiting them. (And yes I realise that this is as fatuous argument as your statement is).

Hey Minnie… I’m sure David’s comment was ironic. Surely. Hopefully. :-\

I didn’t realise my comment would stir such of an opinion, to which Minnie has assumed it to be facetious in accordance to her standpoint… so, let me educate…
There is a difference between Coal Seam Gas (CSG) and Shale Gas. If the main topic of discussion is the damaging and polluting of the water supply/ water basins with fracking chemicals and gas-leakages, you should know there is no proof to suggest CSG does what everyone is claiming – I attribute this mainly to everyone becoming experts after watching ‘Gasland’ (which explored Shale Gas not Coal Seem Gas).
This is my opinion, but what’s the point of talking if nobody ever learns?

Adding to this, Australia has one of the biggest reserves of CSG in the world.
I know the damaging of the Artesian Basin/Local water supplies is of concern, but to void an entire industry and productivity for our economy, not to mention the resource boom is just plain ignorant.
Also, the gas extracted from the Illawarra Region is low in methane concentration, making it less susceptible to contaminating the water supply – if there were to be leakages.

Interesting responses David – I assume from your defense of the industry that you work within it or for it in some way?
Putting aside the unknowns and almost daily news items questioning the safety of CSG and the speed at which is being rolled out… given your admission that “the damaging of the Artesian Basin/Local water supplies is of concern”, why would you disagree with the aims stated in the Stop CSG Illawarra video? In plain English they simply amount to “Can we stop this now and do the proper science on it before allowing it to proceed.”
Is that so unreasonable to you?
Oh, and on the subject of shale vs CSG. Thanks for enlightening us, but it’s just so hard to know which industry spin to believe… BHP’s CEO has just defended shale gas (of course, with $XXbn invested in it he would) and claims CSG is environmentally worse. http://www.smh.com.au/business.....1mcae.html
