Assistant Director Communications

Primary purpose of the role
Working directly to the Chief of Staff, the Assistant Director Communications is responsible for leading the Communications Team and for the day to day management of the Agency’s media engagement. The role is responsible for developing communication strategies and plans and for proactively guiding the agency to deliver and promote high-quality and engaging content for both internal and external stakeholders. Through their management of the small and high performing Communications team, the Assistant Director Communications will oversee ARPANSA’s internal and external communications initiatives, including collateral, publications and intranet and website maintenance and management.

Key accountabilities
• Plan, manage and lead the Communications team to deliver the strategic and operational communications objectives
• Manage ARPANSA’s media engagement, including being the primary media contact, daily media monitoring and developing media responses, releases, interviews, events and strategies.
• Develop and oversee the implementation of communications plans to effectively deliver key messages and increase brand awareness for ARPANSA Provide strategic advice to internal clients to develop and implement communication strategies and activities
• Develop, monitor and educate relevant ARPANSA staff in policies and procedures concerning interactions with the media, consistent delivery of ARPANSA’s brand and other communications functions
• Oversee the Agency intranet and website content and production of the Agency’s internal newsletter

Job specific capabilities
To be considered for this position, you will ideally have had experience in similar roles and specifically have demonstrated skills in media management, communication strategy development, and strategic stakeholder engagement.

You will have excellent skills in media relations, developing and implementing communication strategies and campaigns, and internal and external stakeholder engagement.

You will be comfortable managing a small team and possess highly developed communication skills along with the ability to identify relevant emerging issues and respond in a positive and proactive manner.

You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate from time to time as required. ARPANSA requires all new employees to undertake a baseline security clearance as a condition of engagement.
