Leckie: I want to be a media mogul

Seven boss David Leckie plans to become a media owner in his own right when he retires from the network, he revealed today.

In an interview with the Australian Financial Review ahead of the company’s half yearly results announcement this morning, Leckie said:

“I’m going to try to buy a newspaper or a radio station.”

In the results, just filed to the ASX, Seven’s revenue in the last six months of 2009 was $44m, down 40% compared to the same period 12 months before.

The company has also flagged a “major announcement” . The AFR speculates that this will be an increase in ownership of the network above Kerry Stokes’ 49% stake.

In the wide-ranging AFR interview, Leckie says that any move into newspapers and radio would follow the end of his two year contract with Seven and would depend on private equity backing.

He also reveals his performance is driven by self doubt, tellign the paper:

My weakness is I don’t t think I’m very good. I unbelievably fell into this thing I understand, which is media. But I have a lot of self doubt. I don’tt think I’m very good. I think I’m shithouse.”

He insisted that although there is a succession plan, there has been no final board decision on who will lead the network after him. Sales boss James Warbuton is considered to be a main contender.

Leckie also said that he is writing a memoir, to be published within the next 12 months.
