Screen Australia provides funding to new web series ‘This is Desmondo Ray’

Screen Australia with Screen Queensland, and Sense & Centsability, have financed a new web series, This is Desmondo Ray.

The announcement:

Producer Leanne Tonkes of Sense & Centsability is delighted to announce that THIS IS DESMONDO RAY! a six part web series created by award winning filmmaker, Steve Baker, has premiered online to immediate acclaim.

Within a week of its release the entire series was featured on the prestigious Short Of The Week website, a rare feat for any web series, while Episode 1 received the highly sought-after Vimeo Staff Pick.

The series has also started its festival run with a win! In it’s premiere screening to sold-out audiences at the Chain NYC Film Festival, it won Best Web Series.

Financed by Screen Australia, through the online production program, Screen Queensland, and Sense & Centsability, with the assistance of Chop Shop Post, Sonar Sound, and Taxi Films, THIS IS DESMONDO RAY! follows the adventures of a peculiar man searching for love in a dark and troubling world.

Desmondo was first introduced to the world back in 2013 in the short film, The Video Dating Tape of Desmondo Ray, Aged 33 & 3/4. Desmondo’s dating tape gained a devoted cult-like following online after it too received a Vimeo Staff Pick and went on to premiere at SXSW. Fans worldwide begged to see more of the unlikely hero that led to the series being made.

Said producer Leanne Tonkes: “What makes this series stand out is how it refused to follow the trend of so many other online projects. Meaning – we didn’t want to make this fast-paced
and loud simply because we’re told the online audience has less patience. Steve has created a challenging character with an emotional resonance that intertwines humour, heart, and a little darkness.

“It’s also rare to see such a high production value for an online series. We wanted our audience to be engrossed by the craftsmanship that combines live action, animation, and miniatures to create a truly unique world.”

Filmmaker Steve Baker won Tropfest in 2007, an AFI in 2008, and has worked with numerous international talents, including directing short films for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Emmy award winning TV series, HITRECORD on TV, which included collaborating with Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson.
