Jonathan Marshall ‘quits News Limited’
Jonathan Marshall, the reporter who secretly recorded Alan Jones saying that Julia Gillard’s father ‘died of shame’, has resigned from News Limited reports Media Watch.
According to a comment from John McGourty News Limited’s executive editor of the editorial network, Marshall recently departed the publisher.
“Jonathan Marshall has resigned on his own accord to pursue other opportunities,” McGourty told the ABC’s Media Watch.
Marshall – News Limited’s network investigations editor – made headlines last year after he secretly recorded the radio broadcaster Alan Jones telling an audience that the Prime Minister’s father “died of shame” because of his daughter’s political “lies”.
The story consumed the national media for days and saw advertisers boycott Jones’s employer the Macquarie Radio Network.
Marshall has told Mumbrella that he enjoyed his time at News Limited but would be returning to magazine and broadcast journalism.
“I loved every minute of my time at News Limited and learnt a hell of a lot from some very talented people. I also got very near to qualifying for gold status on my airpoints,” said Marshall.
“The time now has come to go and do something different, I am excited at returning to my broadcast and magazine journalism roots.”
The ABC’s Media Watch program recently criticised Marshall for his handling of a story involving teenager Tristan Barker, who the reporter labelled “Australia’s Worst Internet Troll”.
