MLA looks past Australia for actors to fit The Bill
If you’re wondering why the Border Force-style commander in this year’s Australia Day ad has a particularly dodgy Australian accent then wonder no more – it’s because he’s English.
His name is Huw Higginson and he was a stalwart on British police serial The Bill (which almost every British actor has had a part in at some point) – playing PC George Garfield for 15 years.
However Higginson has been making several appearances on Australian screens in recent years including cameos in Home & Away, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and Deadline Gallipoli.
Good to see MLA and The Monkeys looking outside of white Australia for its male actors.
And for fans of 1990s police drama here’s the opening and closing credits to The Bill, which also features a cameo from Higginson.
It would appear he has lived and been working in Aus for a few years now. Loved him on The Bill!

Higginson emigrated to Australia several years ago so he’s not English, he’s English born.

Dodgy Australian accent? The Australian accent takes many forms, and differs from generation to generation, as it does from state to state.
It is not possible to have a multicultural society and retain a standard accent.
Our once rich and unique accent, blended by Cockney, Cornish, Irish, and other influences, has been diluted over the years by the dominant US influence. Mates have become Buddies, new-chums are rookies, biscuits are cookies, a schedule is a skedule, and I have even heard a laboratory referred to as a Lab-rat-tory.
PS. Dicshon-airy and Cero- moany, are another two.
