Last season brands including Swisse, AIG, Coles, Jetstar, Apple and even ads in trade magazines came under the spotlight on the ABC1 show which has been recommissioned for an extended second season of 20 episodes.
Trained lawyer Morrow rose to fame as part of the Chaser, while Browne is a respected journalist for consumer magazine Choice.Highlights from the first season of The Checkout:
The new season will see regular segments including As a Guilty Mum and Product v Pack Shot as well as new segments like The Checkout Dictionary – a consumer-friendly guide to the meaning of marketer-friendly terms like “Fresh”and “Australian Made” and Right On where lapsed lawyer Julian Morrow takes an annoyingly detailed look at the Australian Consumer Law and how you can use it to your advantage.
Question for The Checkout Hangout: How come we’re all still buying into the brands that advertise to us now that the net is supposed to have made us informed, empowered, self-directed consumers? Is it possible that knowledge is power, but our desire for social status as demonstrated through our sneakers and cars and nutritional supplements and espresso machines was never about buying based on knowledge. Beyond the basics, is what we really crave at the checkout our favourite image of ourselves?

Why is it Bunnings sell Phillips brand lighting but don’t stock the bulb that matches that particular light and it takes 5 days to order a new bulb. Am I meant to cook in the dark till they get me one. Not happy Bunnings or Phillips for using a ridiculously hard to get decotwist slim bulb.

Not really a question but a suggestion that you might like to follow up. Have you noticed that both Herron and Panadol have reduced the number of “pills” in their packets from 22 to 20 but guess what, the price is still the same !

Suggested solution to folks having billing problems with iTunes.remove all your credit/debit card details and just use those vouchers you can buy. I had enormous trouble when iTunes started to bill me for “downloads” I hadn’t ordered !

Why are petrol prices higher in Qld. Strange that it jumped when the 9c State Govt. rebate was abolished. I know that is bordering on ACCC stuff, but they have made it clear that they will not take on the oil giants. I just want to know WHY IS IT SO !
