Pacific Magazines has partnered with global entertainment company Activision to bring augmented reality technology to kids magazine K-Zone.
The partnership has seen the magazine publisher use the Skylander augmented reality app to turn the magazine’s cover into a live game.
Helen Morassut, publisher at Pacific Magazines, said in a statement: “Bringing the cover to life is not only a first for our brand or Pacific – it’s a first for any Australian magazine.
“Together with a wonderful partner in Activision we are breaking new ground – and enjoying the ride.”

The K-Zone special edition which features the front cover that can be turned into a live game coincides with the release of the Skylanders Battlecast game launching April 14.
The May issue of the kids magazine will include a ‘Skylanders Battlecast Cards to Life’ card printing on its cover as well as a covermounted Skylanders Battlecast card. Users simply download the free Skylanders Battlecast app and scan the K-Zone cover to make the characters come to life and battle each other in real time.
Pacific Magazines is supporting the magazine with in-magazine and digital promotion as well as newsagent point-of-sale which invites kids to trial the technology to show how the cover comes to life.
Daniel Findlay, editor-in-chief, youth titles, Pacific, said: “Our Skylander obsessed readers are going to love this execution and we‟re really excited to create something special with a valued partner like Activision.”
“Innovation has kept K-Zone top of the youth market for the last ten years. We‟re continuing to pioneer with this latest launch – and we‟re going to keep breaking new ground as we finalise new and exciting projects in the coming weeks.”
