Scientology ad hits the air in Melbourne
The Church of Scientology is promoting itself on Australian television in an ad which began airing in Melbourne this week.
The “Knowledge” ad is part of the church’s campaign to dispel the image of the organisation as a shadowy force, which Mumbrella reported on in February.
The one-minute ad addresses “the curious” and “the seekers of knowledge” and dares them to “think for yourself. To look for yourself. To make up your own mind,” when it comes to Scientology.
Vicki Dunstan, Church of Scientology Australia President, said the increasing media profile of the church was sparking curiosity in many people who wanted to know more about Scientology.
The ad has been airing on the Ten network. The ad also aired in the US during the Superbowl.
The ad will run for a month in Melbourne, where the new Church of Scientology opened in Ascot Vale.

“The one thing that’s true, is what’s true for you” – That’s the tag line?
In other words, truth is entirely relative and we can believe whatever we want to believe? Nice philosophy to live by…

Interesting idea talking about thought and Scientology in the same sentence.

“… and the fuel of that power is not magic or mysticism but knowledge”. Yeah, knowledge of some guy called Xenu and the Galactic Confederacy.

EVERYONE fails the personality test. The scam is that everyone has a problem, but Scientology can help them with that. (While they also help themselves to your wallet and savings.)

How much do I need to spend before I can communicae with tomatoes? Before I learn about space alien Xenu and his intergalactic conspiracy?

Say goodbye to your children.

Scientology helped me to live a life filled with understanding of who I am, filled with fun and joy and the pleasure to help others. I now can raise my children, help others and enjoy life to the fullest. The Way to Happiness Booklet is a true example of the principles of Scientology. Life at large has, evidently, an enormous urge toward cooperation, love, goodness, mercy, ethics, justice and other things which are pretty hard to find, but in scientology one can find them all and more. Why don’t you go find out for yourself rather than stay in the NOT know. I did!

I’d like to see an ad about this that’s a bit more ‘real’. I’m sure there’s loads of people who are like Anouk and really found something in Scientology. Lots of intelligent, fabulous people seem to be committed to it, it might make it seem more accessible if they just had an ad where they explain why, instead of a deep, mystical script which reveals nothing. I’m willing to believing there’s something in it for others at least, but nothing in this ad makes me feel like they are being transparent.

Good point Jane. I don’t really think this ad was designed for you and I.
Per the article that appears in the left column of this page as I type

we in the industry are an odd bunch to market to
I believe this ad campaign has had some success though in terms of sending traffic to scientology.org where they at least answer such questions as “What is Scientology and what are its core beliefs?” which is probably the transparency and accessibility you’re referring to.
It’s an interesting Marketing challenge; how you’d design a campaign for something as controversial as Scientology. See the Gruen Planet debate on this subject.
