World Cup cricket final becomes most watched show of the year delivering Nine 40.6% share

Last night’s Cricket World Cup final became the most watched show of the year so far with 2.223m metro viewers tuning in to Nine for the second session to see Australia defeat New Zealand by seven wickets to take home the team’s fifth world title.

The first session of the match also delivered bumper ratings for Nine, watched by 1.886m, with 933,000 metro viewers tuning in for the pre-match broadcast. It was been the most-watched event of the year so far, out-rating the Asian Cup final which was watched by 1.081m and the Australian Open final which grabbed a metro audience of 2.008m.

Session two was also the most-watched show across all the demographics.

The match saw Nine easily win the night with a commanding audience share of 40.6 per cent, compared to Seven’s share of 13.8 per cent.

This was up on last week’s semi-final between Australia and India which saw 1.6m people tune in for the second innings as Australia secured its spot in last night’s final.

Seven had a quiet night in light of the cricket, with Border Patrol at 8pm watched by 558,000. In the 8.30pm timeslot Castle was watched by 389,000.

Meanwhile on Ten, which saw its share sink to 8.7 per cent, Shark Tank at 8pm was watched by 587,000, whilst two episodes of Modern Family had 400,000 and 490,000 viewers respectively from 7pm.

The ABC pulled a share of 9 per cent. Inside the Commons at 7.40pm was watched by 452,000 metro viewers.

Over the weekend, ABC’s NSW Votes election coverage was watched by 1.7m metro and regional viewers.

On pay TV, the Malaysian Grand Prix was watched by 143,000 national viewers. It was not shown on free-to-air following a new five year deal which saw Fox Sports secure all 20 of the races live while Ten only will air 10 of the races liveLast year when the race was broadcast on Ten it was watched by 375,000 metro viewers.
