Kimble Rendall: From Shark Bait to Arachnid Fodder ‘Creature Features’
With pre starting next month on the upcoming China/Australia co-pro The Nest 3D, Kimble Rendall’s follow on project from his 2012 directorial debut feature Bait 3D (which scored big time at the Chinese box office) the writer/director is picking up from where he left off, but this time is switching sharks in malls for swarms of funnel web spiders and a preserved mummy or two.
Bait 3D, an Australian-Singaporean ‘creature feature’ co-pro, that also drew on Chinese finance, didn’t gain much traction at the local box office however it garnered over $25 million in mainland China and broke box office records for an independent film. Kimble reprises his dual role as writer/director on the soon to be shot feature, which is an official Australian/Chinese co-production that will be visual effects-driven and primarily shot and post-produced in Australia.
A veteran second unit director who has worked on an array of international features including; The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, I Robot, Ghost Rider, Killer Elite and most recently on Alex Proyas¹ soon-to-be-released Gods of Egypt, Kimble will discuss, with host Luke Buckmaster, his experience with Bait 3D, how he is managed to successfully navigate the Sino-Australian co-production terrain, the horror/adventure/survivial genre and what his hopes are for The Nest.
