Myer celebrates ‘100 years of memories’ with ‘Australia lives here’ campaign
In a bid to align itself with Australia’s history and “significant moments of societal change”, department store Myer has launched its Australia lives here campaign – which will include showcasing iconic products and giving their owners the chance to win modern-day equivalents.
The retailer has curated a list of 100 items sold by Myer between 1900 and 2000 which have “shaped Australian culture”, but is still searching for owners of the final 30 items.
The first vacuum cleaner, 1940s Sunbeam mixer, original Barbie dolls and the first television are all products which could win their owners modern versions.
“To complete the campaign, Myer is looking for your help to locate the remaining 30 items that we are yet to find to complete this iconic product list. Myer is calling on Australians who have these items to submit their story at myer.com.au and help complete the exhibition. If you have the original, you’ll be in with a chance to win its 2017 equivalent,” Myer said in a release.
“If you have an original Coolgardie Safe from the 1900’s, you could win a brand new Smeg fridge. The classic 1960’s Etch A Sketch toy could win you a Samsung Tablet, a portable Gramaphone from the 1940’s will see you receive a Bose wireless sound system, or if you have an original 1960’s Barbie doll, then the complete 2017 range of Barbie could be yours.”
A 30-second commercial has been created as part of the campaign which flashes back to when people would go into Myer to watch the Olympics.
The ad then flashes forward to the modern day when families still watch television together at home.
“We were there then, like we are today, Myer, Australia lives here,” the voicer says at the end of the ad.
Michael Scott, Myer executive general manager of brand, marketing and loyalty, said every Australian has a Myer story to share.
“For my family, it was always a special occasion heading in to town from country Victoria for a shopping experience at Myer, and those memories and products have stuck with me over
the years. Through Australia Lives Here, we are keen to hear from our customers on how these iconic products have played a role in their lives. This campaign and exhibition celebrates the beautiful stories that Australians have to share and documents the rich history of our country.”

I have a sunbeam mix master which was originally my mothers. Not sure when she bought it but thought it could be 70s or 80s. I still use it and has original white bowls. Thought you might be interested in this mixer for your display.

I bought a cutlety set from a lady 2 years ago to match my silver cutlery se “hampton court”. The set was bought from Myer between 1948,1949 and 1950, I have the original receipts. Because of World War 2 all pueces were not available so purchased at different times. I also have a letter from Myer “Correspondence Dept”advising the availability of the plate knives. I have the details of the original purchasers and the family member whom I dealt with.
