School Strike 4 Climate and CHEP create the Climate Doctor’s Certificate

To encourage school-aged kids to attend the upcoming School Strike 4 Climate (SS4C) on 17 November, and ‘avoid’ facing disciplinary action in the process, SS4C has partnered with creative agency CHEP to create a climate-focused doctor’s certificate.

The Climate Doctor’s Certificate puts a spin on the standard doctor’s certificate, with the document signed by “prominent climate PHDs” rather than medical professionals.

Sporting a black and red scheme reminiscent of heat and coal, the certificate argues that the owner is unable to attend school due to various symptoms: climate policy anxiety related to inaction, increased stress caused by climate emergency observations and despair for leaders’ indifference to the future.

Doctor Nick Abel – an honorary associate professor at ANU’s College of Science – and Doctor David Karoly – an honorary professor Emeritus and councillor on the Climate Council of Australia – have lent their signatures to the document.

With their deep understanding of environmental science, both Dr Abel and Dr Karoly oppose the notion that students are eligible for punishment should they attend the protest.

“This fight is the most important one that we’ll fight in this lifetime or next,” explained Dr Karoly.

“We’ve left a mess for the younger generations, and we all need to do our part to support them in ensuring there’s hope in the future that lies ahead of them. That’s why I’ve put my name down as a signatory of the Climate Doctor’s certificate, and why I’ll be side-by-side with these incredible students on the 17th of November.”

For SS4C spokesperson Joey Thompson, the strike is vital for students’ and the planet’s future.

“As we hurtle towards a summer of dangerous heat waves, the federal Labor government is failing young people by approving new coal and gas projects. They are just pouring more fuel on the fire.”

“We need to take action to make sure our voices are heard and continue to fight for a fossil fuel free future, instead of empty promises and continued degradation of our planet’s health. Download your own Climate Doctor’s certificate, head down to the rally and make your voice count.”
