The ‘Tiser slides into the digital age
Dr Mumbo knows better than to encourage the voracious wrath of the Adelaidians like a certain SBS sports reporter once did, but he does wonder if things are a little behind in Australia’s Festival State.
Supporting this is the fact that somewhere on the staff of the Adelaide Advertiser, someone seemed to think a digital ‘slide to see’ image – which undoubtedly works fantastically on the internet – would work in a printed product.

But much to Dr Mumbo’s, and Twitter’s, sadness, you can’t just print an image with a little arrow in the middle and have it translate in the same fashion.
While it’s clear the purpose was to drive readers online, where they would be able to slide through the decade of changes, one has to question whether, after the frustration of dragging their finger back and forth over a 2D image, the readers would still have the energy to find the feature online.
In the future, newspapers should stick to paper-based image features, such as pop-ups or lift-the-flaps.
Why is this a story? Especially at a time when there’s so many amazing technological developments by The Advertiser (and other news mastheads) that never rate a mention. I was fortunate to be one of the judges at the News Media Awards this year and saw so many incredible digital news extensions by numerous news media outlets. I well remember The Advertiser’s entry as they streamed LIVE their newsroom on the night of the Federal election campaign. Anyone could watch in real time the judgments reporters/editors made as they pulled together the paper and website. And the way they digitally presented the promises of each candidate for each electorate online was a fabulous innovation. And have you looked at the local newspapers/websites live streaming local sporting matches? The industry needs to focus on the media/people really innovating and making media better for all. Let’s make that our goal for 2020.

Some would say you were unlucky enough to attend that absolute snorefest.
