Venom cracks $9m on opening weekend at box office
New Marvel Comics film Venom entered the weekend box office with $9.336m in earnings.
The film is based on the story of journalist Eddie Brock, who tries to take down the founder of the Life Foundation, Carlton Drake, and stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed. It ran across 519 screens.
It earned a significant amount more other films over the weekend, including Small Foot and Johnny English Strikes Again. The two films made $2.882m and $1.979m respectively.
Night School, which premiered the week prior, fell from third to seventh place at the weekend box office, making an additional $1.225m across 220 screens.
More popular was new film The House with a Clock in its Walls, which achieved $1.394m and ran across 283 screens. The thriller first premiered on September 20 and is based on the life of a ten-year-old who goes to live with his uncle.
Ladies In Black also added more than $1m to earnings, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia Report. Since the premiere, it has made $7.673m.
