LinkedIn surpasses 2m Australian users

Business social networking site LinkedIn has exceeded the 2m user mark in Australia, expanded its local team and opened an office in Melbourne.

The announcement:

Sydney, Australia – 14 April 2011 – LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network with more than 100 million members globally, has surpassed two million members in Australia.

LinkedIn set up its direct presence by establishing an office in Sydney in January 2010 and has recently opened an additional office in Melbourne. The company has also grown its local team to 20 staff working across sales, marketing and recruitment solutions.

“Given that we focus solely on the professional audience, this is a significant milestone for us,” said Cliff Rosenberg, Managing Director for LinkedIn in Australia and New Zealand. “Our growth has been driven by Australian professionals using LinkedIn to network, build their online brand, gain insights from the community and find new career or business opportunities.”

“Since we established local operations, we have seen strong demand and response for our recruitment and marketing solutions services. We have also had success in establishing local relationships with Optus and Vodafone Hutchison Australia to offer our members free access to LinkedIn on their mobile to drive further usage,” he added.

Listed below are some interesting statistics about LinkedIn’s membership in Australia:

  • Fastest growing industry sectors in Australia are Think Tanks, Higher Education and Hospital & Healthcare
  • Most common last name of professionals are Smith, Jones, Brown and Lee
  • There are 45.8 million connections between members
  • 485  professionals list ‘winemaker’ as their job description
  • 18 of the ASX-listed companies are using LinkedIn’s hiring solutions
  • 1,276 professionals listed ‘guru’ in their profile
  • 12,108  professionals listed ‘social media’ in their title description

LinkedIn globally is growing at roughly one million new LinkedIn members every week, the equivalent of a professional joining the site at faster than one member per second.

  2. that’s a good milestone, but there really should be around 8 million+ considering the size of the working population.

  10. I think it’s quite good, personally, especially relative to twitter in Australia whose uptake in theory should be higher. There will always be a % of biz ppl and perhaps more in government employment and professions where networking isn’t so important who don’t join up.

The retention/activity rate in LinkedIn seems quite good too; some stats would be interesting.

  12. I just shoveled down a wonderful linguine made from my first name, Roma tomatoes, herbs, garlic and a drop of vino.

I am a chef and I am rarely online. I think 2m is an excellent milestone for a very good site.

I have a cousin in Media and he says that his last 3 hires have been via LinkedIN!!!!!!

    A handy tool indeed.
