Hunger Games lights Aussie box office on fire
The second instalment in the young adult series The Hunger Games has dominated the Australian box office on its opening weekend. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, distributed by Roadshow, made a whopping $12.4m on 580 screens.
According to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (MPDAA), it was the second highest opening for a film at the local box office so far for 2013. While the Jennifer Lawrence headed pic made $2.7m on opening day, before going on to take $12.4 across the weekend, it didn’t quite reach Iron Man 3 which took home $3.4m on opening day before netting a total of $14m over opening weekend earlier this year. Catching Fire also opened in the US this weekend and while weekend figures are yet to be tallied due to the time difference, industry analysts are predicting it will make around $150m in its home market.
Also opening this weekend was Adoration. Distributed by Hopscotch/eOne and directed by Anne Fontaine, the film was shot in Australia last year. It made just $71,490 on 44 screens. Starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright, the film tells the story of two women who pair off with each other’s much younger sons.
