Hunger Games takes 2012’s biggest opening day at box office
The Hunger Games has taken $1.75m on opening night at the Australian box office according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
The much anticipated film opened across 471 screens for a screen average of $3715 to make it the biggest opening day for 2012.
Adapted from the novels of Suzanne Collins this is the first film in a trilogy, and is being compared to the Twilight series for its romance/sci-fi youth targeting.
In Australia, the film by produced Lionsgate, is distributed by Roadshow Films.
Phil Oneile, Roadshow Films director of marketing said: “The film’s strong opening day figures show Australian audiences have been eagerly waiting to see these popular characters translated to the screen. We are thrilled with the response and anticipate the film’s success to continue growing.”
In the US, the film is expected to be the widest release of a non-sequel film by a non-major studio.
$1.75? Wow. That’s some serious ROI.

It just goes to show what can happen when you really understand your own brand & the market it’s aiming at.
As a 43y.o. who hadn’t read the books, it’s a solid 8.5/10. Congrat’s to Lionsgate & Roadshow Films.

Don’t know if I am the target audience, but will probably give it a miss – I didn’t see the Twilight movies either.
But if you are looking for a good movie to see for adults, I can recommend
– Safe House with Denzel Washington
– Margin Call – gripping fillum

@Andy T: $1.75 is a great take for the movie’s debut, ins’t it? The all-time high for a blockbuster weekend was Harry Potty #7, which raked in $2.50, behind that The Dark Knight with $2.20. SO $1.75 is pretty respectable.
The thing is, Hunger Games cost a lot of money to make – I hear the budget was almost $100 – so it will need quite a few solid openings like this to really get ahead.

I don’t think $100 million is that unreasonable. That’s what it costs to make movies these days and they will get that back at the box office easily. I’m sure the marketing and distribution costs are on top of that $100 though…

Can you add the m after $1.75.

The interesting thing is tie-in merchandise in Australia for the Hunger Games is almost non-existent. Teens have been clamoring for posters, t-shirts & other products for the past few months – many have resorted to Amazon and other overseas sites to buy products. The teens were already telling us this was going to be big with pre-sale tickets, book sales and magazine sales, yet it somehow slipped through the merchandising cracks. A bit of a lost opportunity.

Hi Rob.
Apologies, indeed there was an ‘m’ left off.
$1.75 would be an entirely different news story.
Cheers
