Broken Hill, star destination for Lonely Planet

Broken Film has been chosen by Lonly Planet in its Films where the destination is the star list due to its role in Mad Max 2.

“This international recognition only reinforces our belief that filmmaking and Broken Hill have a long and prosperous partnership to look forward to,” said Film Broken Hill project coordinator Lyndall Roberts.

The listing says:

Think of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) and what comes to mind: sandblasted rock? Road kill? Flat desert plains as far as the eye can see? Dry creek beds? No special effects were used to create that particular postapocalyptic environment because – minus the leather-clad berserk bikers and Mel Gibson – that’s exactly what you can expect to find around Broken Hill in remote New South Wales, where much of The Road Warrior was filmed. This is real outback territory, where men are men and sheep run for cover.

The NSW outback community has recently seen $2m spent on converting a 1930s power station into a film studio, where Mad Max: Fury Road is expected to be shot next year – with more than 300 cast and crew to be based in Broken Hill for approximately 30 weeks.

According to a statement from the local Government, discussions are under way with Government agencies “for a further $9m”.

Roberts said that an average of $700,000 is spent annually on screen productions in Broken Hill, and the new studio is expected to increase the city’s filmmaking capabilities. She added that Fury Road‘s pre-production alone has already delivered economic and media interest in the region.
