Jane Speechley

While harbouring a secret desire to be a journalist, Jane Speechley found her way into public relations around 15 years ago and somewhere along the way, it became much more of a lifestyle choice than a career.

Never one to do things the traditional way, it was quite a bit later in her career that her Diploma in Public Relations was joined by a Bachelor of Public Relations, studied full-time and entirely by distance education while working full time.

After working for a number of high profile national charities, she found herself in her dream job as national communications manager for the RSPCA – at the somewhat tender age of 27. When it was time to move on, working for herself seemed like the only logical next step. Luckily, her back-up plan was never called into action, and she’s been running her very busy consultancy now for over five years.

She’s worked hard to build her skills and gain as much experience as she could, and now, nothing gives her greater satisfaction than using her knowledge and energy to help a worthy cause. She really enjoys working with non-profits and SMEs to find creative and affordable communication solutions.

Jane is also a big advocate for ethical public relations practice and believes it’s in the interests of the industry and all its stakeholders to ensure all organisations have the opportunity to access to quality communications advice and support.

Lately, a Certificate IV in Training and Evaluation has joined the framed documents on her wall, which should garner much more respect from students at the Canberra Institute of Technology and University of Canberra, where she teaches casually.

Meanwhile, she continues to satisfy that ever-hungry inner journalist with some casual work as a radio producer and far-too-infrequent forays into freelance writing, which she absolutely relishes.
