From what the fuck, to giving a fuck
In this guest post, Bec Brideson looks back on the 12 months since Cindy Gallop returned gender diversity in adland Australia to the public forum…
Do you feel that? The winds of diversity are blowing us swiftly from simply talking about it to giving it a fucking go.
Honest, accountable conversations are happening around diversity where there was once silence. Denying gender bias now makes you the outsider and ‘shutting up and getting on with it’ is no longer your only option.
Thanks to digital disruption, we are open to doing things in a new way with new perspectives. We are finding ways to bring the command and control mindset on a journey of growth, change and transformation.

Articles like this are an indictment on our media and education system, which, instead of teaching critical thinking, teaches feminist ideology to people too immature to realise they’re being indoctrinated. Like our friend Bec here. I know you mean well Bec, but your argument is an unholy, anti-scientific blend of ideology and self-interest. I’m sorry to say so, but you and the rest of the Cindy Gallop acolyte horror-show are the biggest racists and sexists of them all. Try, just for fun, to change ‘black’ and ‘woman’ with ‘white’ and ‘man’ with everything you and your friends say and my point may start to dawn on you.
“When you can’t control your emotions, you start controlling the behaviour of others” John Cleese.
“Political correctness is fascism pretending to be manners” George Carlin.
“We don’t need no thought control” Pink Floyd
Bring it on ya-ya sisterhood, do your thing and call me a sexist!
There are few things that makes my blood boil more than a feminist telling me I need EQ training because I’m a man. May I propose instead that contributors to Mumbrella go through mandatory IQ training?
So well written, Bec and 100% true. Keep leaning in, disrupting and talking.

Hi Bec – is it really necessary to use the F word twice in your headline? Sort of makes it hard for many people to share your content or engage with it in the first place. How about try WTF in future.
While I’m here may I wear my pedant hat and suggest you change your boilerplate to read something like “…was one of the only 3% of Creative Directors that are female. “. Unless 3% of all females are actually creative directors.
Bec … please don’t align with Trump, you’re better than that.
Resorting to locker room talk and swearing like a sailor just to get attention demeans you, your agency and your cause. You don’t need to stoop[ to conquer
As with some comments above I too find some of the language appalling and very unprofessional, there are many ways to get your point across without resorting to that, I hope Mumbrella lifts it’s standards in the future
Bec, ignore all the scared men commenting. Your article is truth. In clear and powerful language. More please. Love the fucking swear words.
Pure class
Oprah Winfrey — ‘You can have it all. Just not all at once.’
did you guys even read the article? the F word in the title is a reference to Cindy Gallop’s comments.
to “The voice of reason” – you truly are a walking cliche accusing anyone who criticises the status quo which is clearly geared towards white men – of being racist and sexist towards white men. it’s hilarious.
I actively support getting more females into our creative departments, but I refute being referred to as ‘sexist’, possessing ‘unconscious bias’ or being a ‘white male bondi hipster’ just because I’m a man.
Plenty of men may possess the above traits, but equally plenty of women suffer from sexism, unconscious bias and being white, female bondi dipshits. But being white, male, or female doesn’t give you automatic admission to the pony club.
I also think you do the great women of this industry a disservice. The greatest thing a woman can be is not to be a woman in a male dominated industry. It’s to be awesome, regardless of gender. The women doing exceptionally well are people, not women. I look up to them. You should to.
As the Aboriginals say, reconciliation begins once you stop reconciliation and just get along with each other. Maybe this is lost on you.
I admire the fight, but what we really need is a big hug and to honestly, just get on with it. Because the more you say ‘all men are biased’, the more you appear like the actual sexist.
Charming language, which, being translated, means no more than “Look at me.” I looked, then decently averted my gaze.
100% agree with Paridell.
Just pure sleazy
Missed the memo that advertising / marketing was to be staffed entirely by puritans, but I am enjoying all the faux pearl clutching at the language in the headline (paraphrasing Gallop’s presentation a year ago) and commenters spectacularly missing the point, while becoming perfect examples of why the conversation is so, so, so necessary.
