‘History is Calling’ on Australia in campaign for Indigenous Voice referendum via The Monkeys

The Uluru Statement has launched a new campaign ‘History is Calling’, created by The Monkeys, part of Accenture Song ahead of the First Nations Voice referendum, urging Australians to consider how a ‘Yes’ vote could change the nation.

The ad tells a story, largely led by narrator, Pitjantjatjara and Nyungar man Trevor Jamieson of how First Peoples achieved a Voice to Parliament, through the help of Australians.

The campaign seeks to raise awareness in the lead-up to the referendum, encouraging Australians to show support for the Uluru Statement.

On the campaign, professor Megan Davis, Cobble Cobble woman, Balnaves chair in constitutional law at UNSW and Uluru Dialogue co-chair said: “The ad shows Australians from all walks of life that they have an opportunity to play a part in shaping this pivotal moment in our nation’s history.”

“It’s vital in these next few months that we continue this momentum and educate Australians on what the Voice is, why it matters and what it will do for the future. We know this will take time, as many Australians are only joining us on this long journey now, but we are closer than ever to real, tangible change.”

“We hope this ad will encourage Australians to learn more and support a First Nations Voice to Parliament.”

Pat Anderson, Alyawarre women and co-chair of Uluru Dialogue (who also features in the ad) said: “We are on a journey to nation-building, but we cannot do this alone. This referendum requires all Australians to get behind it.”

“Silence never made history and History is Calling. It’s up to all Australians to answer. We call upon the nation to continue walking with us on this final stretch to a better future.”

The ad was made by The Monkeys, alongside Rabbit Content, and was directed by Jordan Watton, a Kamilaroi man, alongside cinematographer Arrernte, and Kalkadoon man, Tyson Perkins, and music composer, Yuwaalaraay man, James Henry.

The Uluru Dialogue was created in 2017 and is the collective of First Nations leaders including architects and authors of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, who lead community education on the Uluru Statement’s reforms of Voice, Makarrata.

The Indigenous Voice to Parliament – a constituted body of elected Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people – was proposed in 2017 following the Uluru Statement, and this year after being elected, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised a referendum during his term. No date has been set as of yet.
